고대 도시 에베소는 현재 이즈미르 주의 셀축 지역에 위치하고 있으며, 기원은 BC 6,000년경 신석기시대까지 거슬러 올라간다.

근래의 연구 조사와 발굴 작업을 통하여, 에베소와 현재 성이 있는 아야술룩 언덕 주변의 고분 지역이 청동기 시대와 히타이트 시대의 거주지였음이 밝혀졌으며, 히타이트 시대에 이 도시는 '아파사스'로 불렸다.

 

BC 1,050년경 그리스의 이주민들이 고대 항구 도시 에베소에 정착하기 시작하였으며, BC 560년경 에베소의 중심지는 아르테미스 신전 주위로 옮겨졌다.

 

현재 위치의 에베소는 BC 300년경 알렉산더 대왕 휘하의 장군인 리시마코스에 의해 최초로 건립되었다. 헬레니즘시대와 로마 시대에 최고의 황금기를 누린 에베소는 소아시아 주의 수도이자 최대의 항구도시로서 당시에 20만명이 거주했다.

 

비잔틴 시대에 에베소의 중심지는 최초의 위치인 아야술룩 언덕으로 다시 한 번 옮겨졌다.

The History of Ephesus

 

The foundation history of ancient Ephesus, which is whithin boundaries of Izmir province & Selcuk district goes back to the Neolitic Ages(6,000 B.C.). The researches & excavations in recent years revealed settlements from Bronze Age & Hitite period on tumuli (Prehistoric hilltop settlements) around Ephesus & Ayasuluk Hill where the castle is located today. The city was called as Apasas during the Hitite period

 

Ephesus which was a port city in a ancient times & had Greek settlers from around 1,050 B.C., moved to the periphery of the Artemis Temple in 560 B.C.

 

The ancient city visited today was founded around 300 B.C. by Lysimakhos who was one of the generals of Alexander the Great. The city lived its heydays during the Hellenistic & Roman period, & had a population of 200,000 as the capital & largest port city of Roman Province of Asia

 

During the Byzantine period Ephesus moved once again to Ayasuluk Hill in Selcuk, where it had been first founded.
