The Celsus Library, certainly the most well-known monument in Ephesus, was built between A.D. 100 & 110 by Gaius Iulius Aquila for his father, the senator Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus. The library can actually be interpreted as a heroon which was built over the burial chamber of the deceased.

A flight of nine steps at the facade, flanked by statue bases, led to a vestibule from which the actual library room could be entered. The aediculated architecture of the impressive facade contrasts with the brick construction of the building's interior, although the floors & walls were revetted with marble. The library was destroyed during an earthquake in ca A.D. 270 & was not rebuilt. In the late antique period the remnants of the splendid facade served as the rear wall of a street fountain. The re-erection took place during the years 1970-1978 with the financial help of Anton Kallinger-Prskawetz.

에페소 유적의 대표적인 유적 격으로 135년 줄리우스 이퀼라가 그의 아버지인 셀수스를 위해 지었다고 한다. 셀수스는 당시 이 지역의 총독으로 부임해 통치하였으며 이곳에서 생을 마쳤다고 한다. 셀수스를 위해 지었기에 도서관 아래에는 셀수스의 무덤이 있다고 한다. 지금의 도서관은 1970년대 부터 복원이 시작되었는데 당시 복원을 한 오스트리아 고고학자들에 의해 중요한 유물들이 전부 오스트리아로 옮겨져 현재는 복제품만 존재하고 있다. 도서관은 많은 부분이 무너졌지만 외벽은 아직도 굳건히 서 있으며 벽에는 화려한 문양과 글자들이 새겨져 있다. 재미있는 것은 이리저리 연결된 도서관의 지하가 홍등가와 연결되어 있다는 점이다. 도서관에는 문이 3개가 있는데 각각 지혜, 사색, 학문, 미덕을 상징하는 여성상들로 장식되어 있다. 발견 당시 12,000여권의 책이 소장되어 있던 대형 도서관이었으며, 만들어질 당시에는 알렉산드리아 도서관, 페르가몬 도서관과 같이 세계 3대 규모의 도서관 중의 하나였다고 한다.
