This book, published in 1931 with 145 printed editions, and acquired in 2009 by the Foundation, contains 30 illustrations made by Picasso in the years 1930-1931. These etchings depict an elegant interpretation of the myths of Ovid and stand as proof of the artist's fascination for the Classical world. With great fidelity to the text of this book, the Malaga artist produces figures that are characterized by the economy of their linear strokes and the sensuality of the themes, even those that contain violent images.

PIcasso's origins as a ceramic artist date from 1948 when the first exhibition in Paris was held devoted exclusively to this new facet of the Malaga painter. who discovered in the elements of clay, varnishes & kilns a field for experimentation & a source of happiness that yielded around 2,000 pieces in which traditional forms undergo reinterpretation & transformation. PIcasso's fame as a ceramic artist quickly spread at a time when the end of the Second World War was seen as a promise of peace & life, & consequently this artistic work, created using primordial elements contributed towards PIcasso's image as "labourer of earth & fire", in the words of Leon Moussinac.
Although as early as 1895 Picasso had produced paintings in plates, it was in 1947, when the Malaga artist devoted himself entirely to ceramic art following a visit to Vallauris, a town with a rich tradition of pottery making, accompanied by his new companion, Francoise Gilot. There, in the Madoura studio-workshop, Picasso was to give form to his creastive euphoria in pieces such as those included in this exhibition & which belong to the collection of Pere A. Serra. Made between 1950 & 1963, they represent the full maturity of Picasso as ceramic artist, with the multiple formal & & decorative combinations that alternate in his modelled work dating from these years: mythological figures such as the centaur, fauns dancing or on horseback & flautists with animals; bullfighting scenes such as the bull charge, the picador with his horse, the bull goring or at rest; geometrical decorations; animals such as the goat, the owl perched or in flight, stilt-legged birds of fishes; forms such as the plate decorated on one or both sides, plates con design in relief, the tray, the vase & the jug; anthropomorphic references such as heads of women, faces in profile or that smile festively & in full frontal pose, that make fun or sleep; jugs drawn on vases, vases which are at the same time naked women or birds.
The over-brimming vitality of these forms & references is the best testimony to the maturity of an artist who depicted in these ceramics the optimism of the happiest years of his life, as well as bearing witness to the passion of a collector, Pere A. Serra, by virtue of some works that transmit that same appetite for dynamism & happiness & which, in a particularly emotive gesture of friendship & generosity, the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation is putting on show for the enjoyment of all.
Picasso : The Metamorphoses
Picasso's work as a literary illustrator occupies a distinguished place among his work as an engraver, having remained overshadowed by th amgnitude if his work as a graphic artist. Our artist carried out illustrations for 156 books that were published between 1991, during his rose period, & 1974, one year after his death. The foundation has among its collections, 44 of these titles, published between 1911 & 1971. In this exhibition we have those titles representing the museum's most recent acquisition: "The Metamorphoses" by Ovidio, purchased in 2009.
We find ourselves before one of the most elegant & harmonic groups of illustrations, carried out with a clear vision of the whole, & united predominantly by the curved line, almost mazelike, at the disposition of the best Picasso classicism. This involves, in addition, the first title that Picasso participated in from the start of the project, because up until that moment he had limited himself to only select prviously made engravings. on this occasion, the young editor Albert Skira offered Picasso the opportunity to illustrate a book of his choice. A dream in which he turned into a fish made Pierre Matisse suggest that he choose "The Metamorphoses" by Ovidio, in which he recounts more than 250 transformations of mythological characters. The idea intrigued the artist, native of Malaga, who carried out the 30 etchings, full of tension & delicate eroticism, between September & October of 1930, while living with Marie-Therese Walter in Boiusgeloup. The first issue in this volume, of which only 145 were made, was given to Picasso on the day he turned 50, October 25, 1931. Ther exercise in virtuosity that Picasso performs in these engravings is such that this, in the words of William S. Liebermann, is one of the most admirable books of our century".
