The Rundale palace - Summer residence of the Duke of Courland & the favourite of Russian Empress Anna Joanovna, Ernst Johann Biron - was built according to the design of the architect of Russian court Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli from 1736 till 1740

After the death of Anna Joanovna in 1740, the Duke was arrested & the building of the palace restarted only when he returned from exile, at the beginning of the reign of Empress Katrina II. Most of the palace interior is made in Rococo style between 1765 & 1768. The painting works were done by Italian artists from Petersburg, Francesco Martini & Karlo Cuki, but the sculptural decorations & the artificial marble of the walls was made by a master from Berlin, Johann Michael Graff.

When in 1795 the Duchy of Courland was joined to Russia, the Rundale Palace became the property of Earl V. Zubov, but later - his brother Grand Duke P. Zubov. When Zubov's widow married Earl A. Shuvalov, Rundale became the property of the Shuvalovs family & they possessed it until the Land Reform in Latvia in 1920

In 1972 the Rundale Palace Museum was founded & the renovation of the Palace began, which is still continuing. In 1981 the fist halls on the East block were opened to public, but now on the two floors of the Palace the visitors can see already 48 renovated rooms.

In total there are 138 rooms on the two floors of the Palace. The central block is occupied by Duke's rooms, but in the East block the representation rooms were located - the Golden Hall (Duke's throne hall), the White Hall (dancing hall) & the Big Gallery (party diner). The duchess & other members of the ruling family lived in the West block.

The old furniture of the Palace has been scattered over different Euopean countries & only some of the previous pieces have returned to the Palace as presents by Duke's descendants. Despite this fact, all the renovated rooms have been equipped with original objects & art works, purchased especially for this purpose

The Rundale Palace Museum also deals with investigating the art of the most ancient part of Latvia, gathering collections, organizing exhibitions & preparing publications. In addition to the palace interiors, it also exhibits expositions about the history of the Palace & the Birons family, as well as hosts different exhibitions.

In the exhibition "Clothes of the Baroque Period in Latvia" clothes of the 17-18th century, fragments of clothes, cloths, design details, laces, socks & footwear are exhibited.

In the first-floor exhibition halls you can see the exhibition "Treasures in the Rundale Palace", which is made of the objects of museum collection & exhibits European & Eastern art during four centuries.

On the plinth floor of the Palace the exhibition "Stone Carvings in Latvia" is opened, but in the palace stables - the exhibition "Disaster Period", which is a story about the fates of the Evangelical Lutheran churches in Latvia during the Soviet times.

The Rundale Palace ensemble is made by the Palace with its inner yard & the stable & cart-house buildings, built in a semi-circle that surrounds a wide parade yard. All this, together with the regular part of the park - French garden, is surrounded by a canal that was specially dug, behind which a forest continues - it was the hunting park of the Palace.

The regular part of the park of the Rundale Palace, which has been renovated according to its initial  design, is the most outstanding sample of Baroque garden not only in the Baltics, but also in a wider region of Northern Europe. The park is still being developed but the exhibition opened in the Gardener's House shows the chronicle of the renovation events & introduces with other samples of French gardens in Europe.
