TOMBSTONES

From the St. Catherine's dominican friary in Tallinn

These tombstones are from the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria & belonged to the members of the Magistrate of Tallinn, the Brotherhood of Blackheads, the Great Guild & others. In the mid-19th century the western part of the ruined church was restored & the best preserved tombstones were displayed on the wall

 In 1874 the burgomaster of Tallinn Andreas Koch used some of the better-presereved tombstones for paving the floor of the barn installed into the ruins of the church. For a time some of the tombstones were on display in the private collection of Woldemar Salza, the commander in chief of Tallinn. in 1882, most of the tombstones were moved to the summer manor Rocca al Mare near Tallinn by the burgomaster Arthur Girard de Soucanton. The tombstones were displayed along a small road which was named Via Appia after the famous ancient road from Rome to Capua.

 In addition to the tombstones which were displayed on the southern wall of the ruins of St. Catherine's church in the 19th century, in 1959-1960 the rest of the stones were brought back from Rocca al Mare, restored & displayed next to the others. The tombstones of Wacke family (second half of the 14th century) originating from St. Catherine's church is on display on the wall of Kohtu 6 Toompea.
