신타그마 광장 뒤쪽에 위치한 올림픽 경기장으로 1896년 제1회 근대 올림픽이 열린 스타디움이 남아있다. 올림픽 경기장으로 사용하기 위해 기원전 331년 아테나 대축제 경기장으로 지어진 것을 제1회 근대 올림픽이 열리기 바로 전 해인 1895년에 고대 경기장에 가까운 형태로 복원한 것이다. 지붕이 없고 트랙은 말굽 모양을 하고 있으며 대리석 좌석에 5만 명 정도의 인원을 수용할 수 있다. 2004년에 다시 아테네에서 올림픽이 열린 것을 계기로 다시 복원 및 개선 작업에 들어가 올림픽이 열리는 해 1월에 모든 작업을 마치고 현재의 모습이 되었다고 한다.

개보수를 진행하다가 2004년부터는 통제하여 입장료를 내고 들어갈수 있으며,

아테네 올림픽때는 양궁 경기장과 마라톤 출발점으로 사용하였다.
