Breu Altar.  멜크 수도원(Melk Abbey). 오스트리아(Austria)

Breu Altar

Jorg Breu the Elder (ca. 1475-1537); 1502

Tempera on wood.

One should picture a double winged altar with a total of eight panels painted on both sides: When the altar was opened, the four scenes from the life of Mary framed the shrine, which has since been lost. When partially opened, the eight fields show scenes from the Passion:

Upper row:                                                 Lower Row:

 1) Christ on the Mount of Olives                         5) The Scourging of Christ

 2) Christ's arrest                                              6) Christ Receives the Crown of Thorns

 3) Christ before Caiaphas                                  7) Ecce homo

 4) The Mocking of Christ                                   8) Pontius Pilate Washes His Hands of Guilt

Back side, Upper row:                            Lower Row:

 9) Crucifixion                                                 13) St. Paul & St. Florian

10) The Circumcision of Christ                            14) 12-years old Jesus in the Temple

11) The Annunciation                                       15) The Flight to Egypt

12) Carrying the Cross                                      16) St. Peter & St. Christopher

Jorg Breu was often inspired by Martin Schongauer & Albrecht Durer. Nevertheless typical characteristics of Breu that he shared in part with other artists of the so-called "Danube School" can be recognized, for example the dynamic depiction. Especially remarkable for the 20th-century observer is the caricature-like blatancy of the facial expressions, which can be interpreted as an exaggerated expression of late medieval intellectuality.
