A Gift to The Earth

On World Environment Day 1998, the first president of a democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela, declared this mountain and the rest of the Cape Peninsula National Park, this nation's 'Gift to the Earth'

 

In his speech that day, President Mandela stated that :

 

  "South Africa, as a signatory to the Convention of Biological Diversity.

is committed to playing its role in the consevation of the global environment. What we have done today by proclaiming the Cape Peninsula National Park, is a message to the world on World Environment Day of South Africa's real commitment to making this international convention a working reality in our country"

 

For all who have been enriched by this mountain and peninsula, who have drawn life, nourishment, protection and ispiration from this precious gem of our natural world - may it never be forgetten that as much as Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula National Park belongs to all of us, we are at the same time entrusted with its care and protection by those who came before and those who will come after.

테이블 산 또는 테이블 마운틴은 남아프리카 공화국의 수도이며 웨스턴케이프 주의 주도인 항구도시 케이프타운 희망봉에서 북쪽으로 약 50㎞ 떨어진 케이프 반도 북단에 있다.

 

정상부가 평평한 산으로 끝없이 이어져 있는것이 특징이며 그 모양이 탁자 모양과 비슷하다고 해서 테이블 마운틴(Table Mountain)이라고 이름이 명명 되었다.

약 17억년전 부터 바다에 형성된 사암으로 인해 생겨 났으며 세계에서 가장 오래된 지층으로 속해 있다.

정상부에는 동식물의 고유종과 특이한 고대 생물종이 많아 생태 보호 지역으로 지정 되어 있다.

높고 바위가 많은 케이프 반도 북쪽 끝에 케이프타운과 테이블 만을 굽어보며 우뚝 솟아 있습니다. 바람과 비의 왕성한 침식작용으로 거의 수평에 가까운 사암층이 드러났기 때문에 꼭대기가 평평하고, 전반적으로 탁상 모양으로 되어 있습니다.
