중앙 통로의 길이가 약 186m, 폭이 140m 높이는 46m이고 중앙의 제대에서 돔까지의 높이는 137m에 이르므로 로마에서 가장 높은 건물인 셈이다.

대성당 내부에는 44개의 크고 작은 채플, 즉 제대들과 395개의 조각품이 곳곳에 배열되어 있으며, 135개에 달하는 모자이크 그림들이 벽면에 장식되어 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament

The area of the Basilica dedicated exclusively to prayer and adoration of the blessed sacrament.

At the Centre

Altar and Tabernacle of the Blessed Sacrament : Tabernacle flanked by two Angels dated 1674: work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and executed in gilt bronze and lapis, shows figural representations of the Risen Christ, the Apostles, and St. Paul. Altarpiece - Oil painting on slate dated 1632, represents The Holy Trinity, from an original work by Pietro Berrettini, also known as Pietro da Cortona.

To the Right

Altar of St. Francis is flanked by two white marble spiral columns with vine scrolls retrieved from the earlier old Constantinian and medieval Basilica.

Mosaic work dated 1801 represents St. Francis receiving the stigmata while held by an Angel, from an original work of 1630 by Domenico Zampieri, also known as Domenichino.

To the Left

Organ was designed and executed in 1582 by Marino e Vicenzo da Sulmona.

Vault and Wall decoration

Gilt stucco decorative cycle with scenes from the Old and New Testaments dated 1627, was designed and executed by Giovan Battista Ricci of Novara and his pupils. Entrance wall : oil paintings with Angelic figures by the painter Giacomo Zoboli and dated 1742.
