BaoFeng Lake

BaoFeng Lake is a small lake which formed by tectonic erosion and artificial cut in deep section of the valley. It is 2 km long, 0.4 to 0.6 km wide, and narrowest point is only one meter, 60-70 meters deep. The dam is 74 meters high. Lake is surrounded by peaks. It is known as the world classic lake.

 

Sandstone

The sandstone is a rock with sand grain of 2~0.05mm size and over 50% content. Zhangjiajie landscape is composed of the sandstone which formed by shallow sea sedimentary in Devonian period 372 million years ago.

 

Orthoceras Fossil

Orthoceras are extinct marine invertebrate species, lived in in the ocean 440-500 million years ago. They are good swimmer with linear shape, ten sticky arms around its mouth catching small animals as food. Orthoceras fossil is popular in the marine layer, especially in the limestone.

 

Vertical Joint

A vertical joint in geology is a vertical crack in rocks. The rocks were cut into separating stelae along the vertical joints by weathering and runoff erosion. Therefore, the development of vertical joints was an important prerequisite for the formation of Zhangjiajie landscape.
