The Cable Car Plaza

Plaza de los Bondes

Opened on November 13, 2009, the Cable Car Plaza displays the two first generations of cable cars used at the Sugar Loaf and two bronze, life-size statues of the men who conceived and implemented the cable cars: Augusto Ferreira Ramos and engineer Cristóvão Leite de Castro.

The first cable cars ran from 1912 to 1972 and the second cars operated from 1972 to 2008, when they were replaced by the current cars.
