Penguins negatively affect the younger vegetation through direct trampling and by

removing soft foliage for nesting material. Excessive trampling and vegetation

removal can lead to gaps in the vegetation and soil erosion.

The rehabilitation process is started by fencing off 'exclusion areas'. This ensures that penguins are not able to enter the area and trample or remove the newly planted

vegetation. Wood chippings are added to retain soil moisture and limits wind erosion.

Once the vegetation has reached the required density to provide shade and is hardy

enough to be resistant to nutrient enrichment - a soil condition caused by penguin

faeces - the fences are removed.

The newly established, indigenous vegetation now prevents soil erosion and also

serves as breeding ground for the penguins. Wood chippings now also serve as

nesting material for the penguins.
