Saint-Paul

The unassailable

Authentic and touristy, quiet and buzzing, Saint-Paul is proud of its paradoxes - they are the key to its charm and identigy. Erected at the top of a hill in the early Middle Ages, the city of Saint-Paul locked itself away behind walls of stone before eventually allowing itself to be tamed. A few remains have survived from the Middle Ages (dungeon, machicolation tower, etc). But on the whole, the architecture dates from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries (Renaissance period). Churches, some ruins and the aqueduct have survived the hands of time and recount the tales that have punctuated the centuries. Today, 7 monuments in the commune are listed historical buildings.

Another chapter of history was written years later by artists. Braque, Chagall, Calder, Leger, Miro, Prevert, Montand and Ventura regularly came to Saint-Paul recharge their creative batteries. Bathed in a beam of sunlight, Saint-Paul continues to glow like a city of colours: a dominant blue complements the patina on age-old stone. Saint-Paul is a source of inspiration and energy, where society events are low-key, where life is sweet, and where art is omnipresent.
