les albâtres

The alabaster pieces displayed in the glass case portray three episodes of Chirst's Passion :

the Flagellation, the Crucifixion and Christ's descent into limbo

These three early 15th century polychrome reliefs come from an altarpiece of Saint-Sernin, one of the city's churches demolished in the 18th century. on the right, two other episodes from Christ's Passion : the Entombment and the Resurrection.

The use of alabaster was widespread in the later 14th and the 15th century. It is a soft, easily carved stone, which hardens on contact with the air. It is porous, easily painted, and when polished can be mistaken for marble.

la ville basse

Now called "bastide saint Louis", its origins date from the siege of 1240 when Raymond Roger Trencavel failed in his attempt to retake the town from the French king's Seneschal with the aid of the inhabitants of the inner suburbs. During the siege the royal forces set fire to these districts and Louis IX (Saint Louis) only allowed the inhabitants to rebuild seven years later, on the other side of the River Aude. The new town soon flourished and by the early 14th century had become one of the major cloth-making centres of Languedoc. It was laid out on a grid plan; the medieval fortifications stood on the site of the avenues that now surround the walled town. There were constant conflicts between the two towns before they were united in a single commune at the beginning of the 19th century.
