The word Tertre is specific to Saint-Emilion and refers to the steep pedestrian cobblestone

streets.

There are four of them in the city: Tertre de la Tente, Tertre des Vaillants, Tertre de la Cadène

and Tertre de la Porte Saint-Martin. Which one will you choose to climb ?

The cobblestones were brought by English merchants, who, as there were trading wine,

loaded them in the ships as ballast before replacing them with barrels full of a precious beverage:
