Alcazaba

One of the oldest parts in the Alhambra & the military area of the complex. You can visit the following areas: the terrace of the Torre del Cubo (Round Tower), the northern wall-walk, the Plaza de las Armas(including the military quarter), the terrace of the Puerta de las Armas(Gate of Arms), Torre de la Vela(the Watch-Tower) and the Jardin de los Adarves (Wall-Walk Garden)

El Partal (Partal)

This area includes the portico of the Palace, the gardens, the Rauda, the Palace of Yusuf III and the Paseo de las Torres (Promenade of Towers).

Generalife

This area includes the lower gardens, the Palace of the Generalife and the upper gardens. It was constructed to be the recreation area of the Kings of Granada, where they escaped from the official routine.

Escalera del Agua (Water Stairway)

 Special feature : Its flumes (Inverted roof tiles) constantly conducting the water from

 the Royal Water Channel.

Silla del Moro (Moor's Chair)

 It was a structure for the control and defence of the Generalife and its orchards, an important area for the distribution of water from the Royal Water Channel to the Alhambra as a whole.

Chronology

1237-1273. Muhammad I al-Ahmar

 Founder of the Nasrid dynasty. He installed his Court on the Sabika hill in 1238, beginning with the construction of the Alhambra

 

1333-1354. Yusuf I

Seventh Nasrid ruler, who constructed the Comares Palace

 

1354-59/1362-91. Muhammad V

Heyday of the Nasrid sultanate, best known for the construction of the Palace of the Lions

 

1487-1492. Muhammad XII / Boabdil

Last Nasrid Sultan. on 2 January 1492, the Alhambra was surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs.

 

1492-1516. Catholic Monarchs.

Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. They conducted extensive repairs and alterations, and installed the Royal House and the headquarters of the General Captaincy of the Kingdom of Granada in the Alhambra

 

1500-1558. Charles V

After his wedding to Isabella of Portugal in Seville, he visited the Alhambra in 1526, and decided to built the Palace, one of the most important works of the Spanish Renaissance.

 

18th Century. The Academicians.

The first scientific and planimetric studies of the site were commissioned by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Femando.

 

1783-1859. Washington Irving

American writer. In 1829, he visited Granada, where he was inspired to write his "Tales of the Alhambra".

 

1870.

The Alhambra was declared a National Monument.

 

1923-1936. The Restored Alhambra.

Leopoldo Torres Balbas.

As a forerunner in scientific restoration, he was the Architecture Curator of the Alhambra and the Generalife. He is remembered for this outstanding interventions in the Palace of the Lions, Mexuar and Partal

 

1984

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee declared the Alhambra and the Generalife a World Heritage Site.
