St. James's Gate Brewery
Guiness stout has been produced here at the St. James's Gate Brewery since 1759. The Brewery occupies over 50 acres of land on Dublin's south site. 3 million pints are crafted here every day for the Irish, UK, European and US markets.
St. Patrick's Tower
St. Patrick's Tower has a distinctive green copper dome. It is an old 'smock' windmill built c. 1805 to grind grain for the former Roe's Distillery. The figure of St. Patrick - complete with mitre and crozier - can be seen on top of the tower.
Croke Park
Croke Park is home to the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) / Cumann Luthchleas Gael, a 32 county sporting and cultural organisation that has a presence on all fiver continents. Croke Park hosts some of the highest profile events in the Irish sporting calendar including the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship finals.
Trinity College
Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I on the grounds of an old Augustinian priory Trinity College represents architectural riches of over four centuries. Trinity College Library is home to more than a million books and priceless manuscripts, the most famous being the 'Book of Kells'
St. Patrick's Cathedral
St. Patrick's Cathedral was built on the site where it is believed St. Patrick performed his first baptism in Ireland, in a well on the grounds which is still there. The Cathedral fell into poor condition until it was restored by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness in the 19th century.
The Liberties
The area between St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Guinness Brewery is known as the Liberties and is one of the most historic parts of Dublin city. Located outside the old city walls, the Liberties is so named because it was subject to private jurisdiction and not to the king or the town.
Wicklow Mountains
The pure water used in brewing Guinness at St. James's Gate comes directly from the Wicklow and Dublin mountain ranges. In fact, Arthur Guinness founded his brewery here at St. James's Gate because of teh excellent water supply.
Grand Canal
Up to the 1960s, Guinness casks were transported around the country by canal barge. It could take up to 10 days to travel by barge along the Grand Canal from the St. James's Gate Brewery to Limerick, a distance of 200km (120 miles).
