The Nowers Monument

This figure of a knight in full armour from the late 14th century is probably John de Nowers who died in 1386. He was a huge man for his day, measuring 6 feet 6 inches (2 metres) tall. His coat of arms (Three golden wheatsheaves) appear on his surcoat.

 

His head rests on a tilting helm and crest in the shape of an ox, and at his feet lies a collared dog.

 

 

 

Mother and Child

The mother and child is a universal image of innocence and new beginnings going back to ancient times. It has inspired artists throughout history. My depiction has been carved in Jarrah wood from Australia, the baby lies in the crib which was formerly a quern for producing flour, Christ being the bread of life. The Mother gazes at the infant with love and a deep sadness as the shadow of what will befall him flashes upon her inner eye, as must happen to so many mothers now and in the past.
