Imagine this hamlet of Town End over two hundred years ago.

Dove Cottage, three other houses and a few small buildings stood here beside this lane. At that time it was a major road, and already 'the main highway of the tourists'. Imagine the scene without the terraced houses opposite and with a view across the fields. Wordsworth sometimes lay with his bedroom curtains open to enjoy the moonlight on the lake and hills.

 

It was in this littel cottage, at times 'crammed edge full' with people, in the heart of the remote Lake District, that William Wordsworth wrote some of the greatest poetry in the English language and his sister Dorothy kept her famous 'Grasmere Journal'. now on display in the Museum. 

 

William came across his first Grasmere home by chance as he walked along this lane with his brother John and his fellow poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in late 1799. He and Dorothy moved in just a few weeks later.

 

The Cottage had once been an inn, the Dove and Olive Bough. It was now to be the Wordsworths' home for the next eight years. In 1802 William married Mary Hutchinson and three of their five children were born here.

1890년 영국 내셔널트러스트(National Trust)가 이 집을 구입하여 관리하고 있다.
