92nd regiment to Foot - The Gordon Highlanders

This sandstone cross commemorated Colonel Kenneth Mackenzie of The Gordon Highlanders. It was designed in 1875 by the cerebrated Victoria sculptor Sir John Steell.

 

The Quartermaster

Kenneth Mackenzie(1811-73) spent 42 years as a British Army officer, much of it as a quartermaster, responsible for ensuring soldiers were well provisioned. He fought in the Crimean War, in the Indian Rebellion or Mutiny and in China. Mackenzie also captured the Irish nationalist William Smith O'Brien after the Young Irelander Rebellion in 1848.

 

Returning Heroes

The Gordon Highlanders were garrisoned at Edinburgh Castle several times. They famously returned to a hero's welcome from crowds of city residents after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

 

War Photography

In 1848, just nine years after the invention of photography, the artist David Octavius Hill and photographer Robert Adamson took pioneering pictures of the Gordon Highlanders at Edinburgh Castle.
