The Name of The World's End

Why is the pub called The World's End ?

Back in the 16th century the city of Edinburgh was a walled city. Parts of the Flodden wall still exist in the foundations of the building and at the bottom of St. Mary's street. The gates to the city were situated outside the pub, the brass cobbles in the road  represent their exact location. As far as the people of Edinburgh were concerned outside these gates was no longer their world: hence the name The World's End
