854년경부터 지금의 위치에 교회가 있었으며, 1120년에 성인 St Giles 에 헌정하는 성당을 건립함. 1385년에 화재 발생이후에 16세기 초까지 복구를 하여 건물 규모가 점점 커지고 화려해졌다.

현재 건물 외관은 1829년 건축가 윌리엄 번(William Burn)에 의해 완성

to maintain this historic building and keep it open to the public,

by free admission, all year round.
