Ticket to Heaven

Sir William provided the Chapel with sufficient funds to employ and support clergy who would pray for his salvation.

In the 15th century when Sir William founded Rosslyn Chapel, reiigion was central to all aspects of life. Praying and seeking God's forgiveness was the first step in securing salvation in the afterlife. Walthy landowners and nobles often went one step further by creating and endowing family chapels and collegiate churches, where groups of priests were employed to pray for their patron's soul.

By the 1440s Sir William was in the comfortable position of having amassed great wealth, and the decided to found a collegiate church at Rosslyn. This would be his ticket to Heaven and would also provide a burial place for himself and his successors.

Sir William provided enough funds for the Chapel, which observed Roman Catholic worship, to have a provost, six canons, or prebendaries, and two choir boys as well as land, houses and gardens. This endowment was designed to pay for the upkeep of the clergy in perpetuity, to provide a continuity of service.

As well as praying for the souls of Sir William and his deceased ancestors, as a coolegiate chapel, Rosslyn's clergy worked to spread intellectural and spiritual knowledge.

The provost, canons and choir boys were employed to recite prayers, sing hymns and read from the Bible at regular times throughout the day and night. They also celebrated medieval Mass, which was sung, and would have been attended by the St Clair family.

The provost was in charge of the collegiate church.

The prebendaries, or canons, who renounced all private wealth, were involved in the administration of the Chapel.

The choristers provided a type of singing called 'plainsong' which accompanied the celebration of Mass and othe services.

Rosslyn Chapel operated as a Collegiate Church for nearly 100 years, until the Protestant Reformation took hold which outlawed Roman Catholic worship. In 1571 the provost, probendaries and choir boys were forecd to resign.

Over the next centuries the Chapel lay unused and neglected, until 1837 when the 3rd Earl of Rosslyn began restoration work. Work on the Chapel continued until 1862, when it was rededicated by the Episcopal Bishop of Edinburgh. It has continued as a place of worship since then.

At the time when many people could not read. Rosslyn Chapel's carvings told visual stories, designed to provide moral instruction. They would have been readily understood by a medieval audience.
