Rosslyn Chapel Turst was established in 1995 to conserve and care for the Chapel.

Under the careful management of the Trustees, work has been carried out to stabilise the Chapel.

 

One of the problems that the Chapel traditionally suffered from was a cold, damp environment. The interior became so wet that algae started to flourish on the Chapel's exquisite carvings. Maintaining a stable temperature has been a top priority of the conservation works.

 

As part of the Trust's commitment to sustainability and low carbon energy a biomass boiler plant has been installed to heat the Chapel and the visitor centre building. Compared with conventional boilers, the biomass boiler produces significantly less CO2 emissions, helping the Chapel to have a greener footprint. You can see facts and figiures on the boilder displayed on the screen to your right.

 

We have minimised the physical footprint of the boiler, which is situated in a specially-built undergrond room close to the car park. Also hidden below ground is the biomass pellet store. This store can hold up to 26 tonnes of pellets - enought fuel to heat the buildings for up to six months.

 

A screw auger moves pellets from the storage facility to the biomass boiler where a relatively small amount of pellets are burned fiercely with a high oxygen supply.

 

The biomass pellets, which come from local supplies, are manufactured from waste wood from sawmills and are an ultra-low carbon fuel source. They produce 80% less carbon than natural gas. The boiler can also burn wood chips from local forests, another ultra-low carbon fuel source.
