Christ Church, Oxford
A self-guided tour
The inscription around the olive tree in the Cloister is from the Book of Revelation (22,2): "The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations"
Welcome to Christ Chursh, a unique joint foundation of College and Cathedral. Christ Church is one of the largest Oxford colleges, with approximately 430 undergraduates and 215 postgrauates. College is the students' home while they are in Oxford. This is where they study, live and eat. Visitors are therefore requested to be as quiet as possible and to keep to the designated route. As a working institution, parts of Christ Church may close from time to time and occasionally without notice. We hope you will enjoy your visit.
Please follow the tour using the route shown on the adjacent map.
As you approached Christ Church, you will have seen Christ Church Meadow, a tranquil area of pasture and tree-lined paths bordered by the rivers Cherwell and Isis. At certain times of the year you may see Christ Church's own herd of rare breed cattle, Aberdeen Angus/Longhorn crosses, grazing.
The Meadow Building, through which you entered, was built in 1863 by Thomas Newenham Deane. The Venetian style was favoured by the famous Christ Church art historian John Ruskin.
The Cloister, like the Cathedral, is part of the original Priory of St Frideswide, which stood here before the college was built. Human remains from the time of Frideswide (the 8th century AD) were found in the central plot. The olive tree (a traditional symbol of peace) and the fountain are contemporary additions to the Cloister and mark the threshold of the Cathedral's sacred space.
The Staircase at Christ Church may seem familiar to some visitors. Several locations at Christ Church were used for scenes in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Professor McGonagall welcomed Harry and his classmates to Hogwarts for the first time at the top of the staircase and the Hall inspired the appearance of Hogwart's Hall and was recreated in a studio for filming.
The fine fan-vaulted ceiling above the Hall Staircase was installed by Dean Fell in the early seventeenth century.
The Hall is at the centre of college life; the academic community congregates here to dine each day and on special occaions banquets are held. The Hall has a magnificent 'hammerbeam' ceiling. Portratits of many famous members of Christ Church hang on the walls, including John Locke, six of the thirteen Prime Ministers educated at the college, and Charles Dodgson.
Charles Dodgson - Lewis Carroll - studied, taught and lived at Christ Church. The then Dean's daughter, Alice Liddell, was immortalised in his Alice in Wonderland stories and so too were many of the places and people they encountered at Christ Church. For example, the brass firedogs have long necks(right); Alice opens out like a telescope after taking a bite from a cake marked 'eat me'.
Above the High Table is a portrait of the college's founder, King Henry VIII, who famously executed two of his wives. In Alice's adventures, the Red Queen continually shouts 'off with her head!"
Detail from the Alice window in Hall, showing the March Hare and Mock Turtle (5th window on the left-hand side wall).
Christ Church is a royal foundation. Following the fall of Thomas Wolsey in 1529, Henry VIII inherited Cardinal College and refounded it, firstly as King Henry VIII's College in 1532 and then as Christ Church in 1546. The reigning British monarche acts as the representative of the Founder and is known as its "Visitor". Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last visited Christ Church in March 2013.
Tom Quad is named after the six-ton bell, Great Tom, which hangs in Sir Christopher Wren's Tom Tower. A statue of Mercury, the winged Roman god, stands in the fishpond at the centre of Tom Quad.
The 'No Peel' door at the foot of the Hall stairs. The words were studded into the door in protest against the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel (a Christ Church man!) who in 1829 proposed greater freedom for Catholics.
Left: Peckwater Quad was built by William Townesend in the grand classical style
Right: Tom Quad dominated by Wren's Tom Tower.
Christ Church Cathedral is unique in being not only the diocesan Cathedral but also the college chapel for Christ Church. A separate information leaflet is available upon entering the Cathedral.
Peckwater Quad is on the site of a medieval inn, which was run by the Peckwater family. The buildings, including the Library, date from the eighteenth century.
Christ Church Picture Gallery contains an internationally important collection of old master paintings and drawings. A small additional entry charge is made. Please ask one of our Custodians for further details.
A 72 page guidebook illustrated with colour photographs throughout is available from the Meadow Gate and Chaper House Shop.
