Welcome to Bond world 007

Between October 1968 and May 1969, the majority of the James Bond movie on her Majesty's Secret Service" was filmed at Schilthorn. In the screenplay the Swiss mountain peak on which James Bond had to fight evil was called "Piz Gloria". Our peak restaurant was then a main location and has been named after the movie until the present day.

For the first time in history, a James Bond movie was shot mostly at its location instead of in the comparatively safe world of Pinewood Studios in London. The principal actor was the then completely unknown Australian George Lazenby. The imposing mountain range, the revolving restaurant, and the Schilthorn cable car gondolas were the impressive background.

The New Bond George Lazenby

Born in 1939, the Australian was working as a model in commercials when he heard that someone of his type might be wanted for the new James Bond film. Before the casting Lazenby went to the same hairdresser as his Bond predecessor Sean Connery; he also had clothes made by the same tailor. His athletic form and his appearance made him the ideal candidate for director Peter Hunt. He die well in the first test shots. In a fight scene he gave a stuntman a bloody nose, which also made an impression. When Diana Rigg, who had already been chosen for the female lead, said "He's great !", from amongst 400 candidates the layman was chosen to play cult Figure James Bond in on Her Majesty's Secret Service".

After filming George Lazenby could have signed a contract for five more James Bond films, but disagreed with the producers on some contractual clauses and refused. At the time he dreated doubts about the James Bond figure as no longer being contemporary. During advertising of the film he appeared with longish hair and a beard, so the producers forbade him from participating in promotional tours. Thus his career as international film star ended, he only played in a few lesser known films. For his performance in on Her Majesty's Secret Service" Lazenby was nominated in 1969 as Best Young Actor for the Golden Globe.
