Nydeggbrücke

Bern's first high-level bridge was built between 1840 and 1844 in a bid to ease the traffic flow within the city, rendering superfluous what had previously been an arduous descent down to the old Untertorbrücke. The bridge blends congenially with the 18th century Baroque road constructions on the land side. Architect Joseph Ferry availed himself of preliminary works carried out as part of a project competition. For many years the bridge boasted the largest stone arch in Europe, with a 46.1 m span and a height of 18.4 m. The classicist solidity of the overall structure is alleviated by three tapering sections, the construction of four toll and guard houses, and the alternation of erratic granite from innertkirchen, limestone and sandstone.
