Hermann Hesse and Montagnola

Between 1919 and his death in 1962, Hermann Hesse lived in Montagnola. It was here where he found the quiet, peace and solitude, a southern climate and expressions of nature's great beauty that he, as a person and as an artist, so much needed.

Besides writing numerous books in Montagnola, which are world known today, such as Siddhartha, Narcissus and Goldmund and The Glass Bead Game, the poet also began painting, inspired by the bright colourful sorroundings of Ticino. In innumerable excursions, Hermann Hesse captured the landscape of the Collina d'Oro on thousands of watercolor canvases.

The Museum Hermann Hesse Montagnola

The Museum in Montagnola was established in 1997 in the rooms of the Torre Camuzzi, directly next to the picturesque Casa Camuzzi where Hermann Hesse lived from 1919 to 1931. From his apartment, he had and expansive view stretching across the Lake of Lugano.

A permanent exhibition in the museum details the writer's life that he led in Ticino. Personal objects as well as numerous pictures, books and watercolours convey an impression of Hermann Hesse's life. Various topics, such as India or the origin of The Glass Bead Game, provide the opportunity to trace the author's writing process.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola presents an extensive and varied program. Temporary exhibits, lectures, films, concerts, guided walks, audioguides and bilingual readings make this a lively meeting point for an international public.

The Museum is maintained and supported by the Fondazione Hermann Hesse Montagnola since 2000.
