Skógafoss waterfall
Skógafoss is widely considered to be one of Iceland's most beatiful waterfalls. It is situated on the river of Skógá, which originates from both Eyjafjallajökull glacier and the westernmost part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The two sources merge by the Kambfjöll mountains, forming the river Skógá, which runs through the Skógárgil canyon until descending from the edge of the moor as the Skógafoss waterfall. Over twenty waterfalls can be found in Skógárgil, many of them breathtakingly beautiful. Some are small and intricate, others high and majestic, Skógafoss, and the river above and below the waterfall, was delared a protected natural monument in 1987
As Skógá approaches the edge of the moor, the river runs over a layer of hard rock until rushing down in a beautifully shaped, 15 metres wide and 62 metres high waterfall. The cliffs are ancient coastal cliffs, which were formed by marine erosion at the end of the last ice age. Then the sea level was much higher than it is now, as the weight of the ice age glacier had pushed the land downwards. As the glacier melted and the weight was lifted, the land could rise and the sea level lowered. Skógafoss's surroundings are particularly scenic, with the water-spray thrown up by the waterfall spreading over the grassy slopes of the surrounding tuff cliffs, where fulmars have taken up residence.
You can walk to the pool underneath the waterfall and stand face-to-face with the forces of nature or walk up the hill on the east side for a majestic view down over the waterfall. The waterfall generates a huge amount of spray, so take care when crossing the wet ground. Due to the amount of spray, you can often see a rainbow under the waterfall. Please walk on marked paths only.
Þrasi's chest of gold
According to legend, a settler named Þrasi hid his chest of gold behind Skógafoss, where it would be hard to reach. For a long time, one end of the chest was visible through the waterfall. Three men from Skóga once attempt to retrieve the chest, managing with great difficulty to place a hook in an iron ring on the side of the chest. They pulled hard, but the chest was so heavy that the iron ring came loose and the mission was aborted. The ring was placed on the door of the church in Skóga and can now be found in the Skóga folk museum. The following verse, bearing witness to this legend, has been passed down through the generations:
The chest in Þrasi 's secret lair
Under the Skóga waterfall
Rewards the one who ventures there
With endless riches, great and small
The ring of Þrasi's chest of gold which he hid behind the Skógafoss waterfall. Later the ring became the door-ring of Skóga Church until 1890 but can now be found in the Skóga folk museum

Fimmvörðuháls Mountain Pass
The Fimmvörðuháls (Five-milestone-ridge) hiking trail, one of Iceland's best known hiking trails, begins here and lies between the Eyjafyallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers. There are 527 steps leading from Skógafoss to a viewing platform above the waterfaill. Form the platform is a rather clear trail that runs along the river Skógá which is ideal for enjoying the waterfalls there. Those who wish to walk all teh way across the ridge follow the river. Further up, the trail becomes less clear and snow-covered sections make the walk difficult. Beyond the footbridge across Skógá, you can choose between two marked trails, one running along the western branch of Skógá and the other partly following a path towards the Baldvinsskáli hut is shorter and safer, marked with blue numbered posts to increase traveller safety and facilitate the work of search and rescue teams. When the highest point has been reached, both trails lead to Magni and Móði, the craters formed in the 2010 Fimmvörðuháls eruption. From there, the trail leads across Brattafönn, Heljarkambur, Morinsheiði and Kattarhryggir until reaching the Úlivist hut in Básar and then Touring Club of Iceland hut in Langidalur. There are two huts on the way that are only open in summer, Baldvinssákli hut on the way up the ridge and Fimmvörðuskáli hut on top of the ridge.
The hiking trail is approximately 16 km and reaches a height of 1100 m. The wind force up there may differ considerably from that in the lowlands and temperature decrease by approximately 0.6℃ for every 100 metres ascended, meaning that the temperature on Fimmvörðuháls is about 7℃ lower than in the lowlands.
Several travel agencies offer trips across Fimmvörðuháls and those not used to travelling in difficult circumstances are advised to contact them.
Remember to make your travel plans known. You can record your itinerary on http://www.safetravel.is/travel-plan/
Weather forecasts can be found on www.vedur.is and www.belgingur.is
Attention
Do not set off without safety equipment, provisions and waterproof protective clothing. The trail is difficult, can be confusing and the weather is unpredictable but when visibility is good, well-equipped hikers can enjoy a variety of amazing sights. ill-prepared travellers run the risk of suffering cold, disorientation and life-threatening conditions and there have been instances of great hardship and even fatalities on the way across the ridge.
It is not recommended to hike across Fimmvörðuháls between 15 September and 15 May
Skógafoss is located in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.
Skógafoss lies just 500 meters off road 1 near Skógá and is easy to access. From the parking lot is is a short walk over the black sand to the impressive and powerful Skógafoss.
The combination of height (62m), a width of 25 meters and an impressive volume of the water makes Skógafoss one of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is very popular by tourists but not to crowded.
On the east side of the fall you can climb up a path crossing some amazing viewpoints. A perfect place for the perfect picture. Although you also see a magnificent spectacle on arrival: dark rock, a mighty river and a powerful waterfall.
Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. The ring was allegedly given to the local church. The old church door ring is now in a museum, though whether it gives any credence to the folklore is debatable.
At the eastern side of the waterfall, a hiking and trekking trail leads up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. It goes down to Þórsmörk on the other side and continues as the famous Laugavegur to Landmannalaugar.
The southern region, specially near Skógar is famous because the many waterfalls short to each other. Named waterfalls in the region of Skógar are: Skógafoss, Miðfoss, Neðstifoss, Selvaðsfoss, Kvernufoss, Sellfoss, Dalárfoss, Skálabrekkufoss, Kæfufoss, Gluggafoss, Rollutorfufoss, Fellsfoss, Steinbogafoss, Fosstorfufoss, Hestavaðsfoss and Holtsárfoss.
