Welcome to Geysir

- The Mid-Atlantic ridge cuts Iceland into two parts, drifting away from each other at a rate of 2cm per year.

- Geothermal areas in Iceland are divided into high and low temperature areas depending on the nature of the geothermal system. The high temperature areas are within the volcanic zone, the low temperature ones outside. Geysir is a high temperature geothermal area with a base temperature.

● Hot springs, low temperature area

Geysir and the surrounding area

The Geysir geothermal area is approximately 3 ㎢ at the surface. Temperatures of the hot springs are up to 100℃ and care is needed when inspecting them.

Activity of a geyser

Boiling and bubbles form          Water-column collapses         Water flashes to steam in

and superheating occurs         the pipe and geyser erupts

A geyser erupts intermittently several cm up to tenths of meters

Please :

⊙ No not throw coins or rubbish into the hot springs

⊙ Be careful - the water of the hot springs is boiling

⊙ Do not damage vegetation nor geological formations

⊙ Keep to the paths, avoid accidents
