Glaciers & Ice caves

Fatal accidents have occured due to collapsing blocks of ice, falls into crevasses and hypothermia. Some have never returned from a glacier visit, their fate still unknown.

Be smart. Use appropriate safety equipment and the guidance of a skilled tour leader.

In front of a glacier

Beware of quicksand and dangerously cold water, sometimes covered with a thin layer of ice. There is also a high risk of falling rocks and rockslides in steep hillsides next to retreating glaciers.

Watch your step, use your head

Safety equipment for glacier walks:

Crampons, an ice axe and a harness. Also a crash helmet when ice climbing or visiting an ice cave.

Tour leader / guide should be equipped with crevasse rescue equipment and a reliable communication device.
