The tower of the New Church has been a recognisable landmark in Delft for centuries. Following a number of renovations, the tower reached its current height: 108.75 metres, making it the second tallest church tower in the Netherlands.

The loud chimes of the New Church bell ring out over the centre of Delft at regular intervals throughout the day. The carillon plays automatically on the quarter hour, half hour, and on the hour, with a different tune for each. The town bellringer also delivers a live performance of this unique instrument at certain times.

The Markt

The Markt (the Market) is the beating heart of historic Delft. By the sixteenth century it had already beedn decided that their should be a market here on a Thursday every week. Faithful to tradition a market is still held on The Markt every Thursday.

The Markt played a central role in the life of Johannes Vermeer, both literally and figuratively. In 1641, at 9 years old, he moved with his parents and his sister to the house on The Markt called 'Mechelen' so The Markt became his playground.

Nieuwe Kerk

It's no wonder the Nieuwe Kerk occupies a prominent position in the painting 'Gezicht op Delft' (View of Delft). Johannes and his sister were baptised there. The Reformed Church, which had been Catholic up until 1572, therefore had particular significance for Vermeer and his family.

Girl with a pearl earring

The skilful technique used in this painting and the subtle suggestion of reflected light, makes the spectator feel that they are the one who has made the girl turn around. Small spots of reflected light bring the turban to life. And the pearl which was created with just a few strokes of paint is truly incredible.

The film 'Girl with a Pearl Earrring' of 2003 was partly recorded in Delft and was based on Tracy Chevalier's novel of the same name. It is a fictitious account in which 16 year-old Griet (played by Scarlett Johansson), goes to work as a maid in Vermeer's household (Played by Colin Firth). Eventually she poses for the famous painting from 1655 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. The film was nominated for various Oscars and won a number of wards.

A Lady Writing

As with the 'Meisjeskopje' this portrait makes you wonder what Vermeer wanted to tell us: a lady, made up with bows and jewellery but not quite ready - note the pearls on the table - who interrupts her writins to look at us. It is an innocent and endearing image and the beatiful shaft of light entering the room illuminates her alone. Take note particularly of the subtle, surrounding details such as the quill. This is a typical example of a work in which he used a camera obscura.

Study of a young woman

'Het Meisjeskopje' (Study of a Young Woman) is an extraordinary and intriguing portrait. one can scarcely imagine this is a Vermeer, because it is so unusual for his models to look directly at him. Although the girl could not be described as a classic beauty, anyone who looks more closely becomes almost hypnotized by the features of her face.
