안트웨르펜의 대성당(Cathedral Of Our Lady)은 로마 가톨릭을 대표하는 성당이자 안트웨르펜 주교가 있는 중심 성당입니다.

 

1352년 착공되어 1521년 완성된 이 건물은 당시 고딕 스타일의 첨탑을 가진 대형 건물로는 유일한 것이었습니다.

또한 크기 면에서도 최대(높이 123m, 너비 117m)를 자랑하는 고딕 성당이기도 했습니다.

 

1533년 화재와 1565년과 1581년, 성상 파괴자의 횡포로 심하게 훼손되었으며, 1585년 가톨릭 교의 복귀로 바로크 형식으로 개조가 이루어졌습니다. 1794년, 안트웨르펜에서 프랑스 혁명으로 인해 모든 가구들이 팔렸으며, 오직 벽, 난간, 첨탑과 지붕만 남겨졌었으나 19세기 동안 내부 복구와 관련된 작업이 이루어져서 고전주의 풍과 신 고딕 풍이 조화를 이루게 되었습니다. 이후 1965년 지방 정부는 성당을 완벽하게 복원하기로 결정하고 본당 복원과 성가대석을 마련하였습니다.

중앙 돔 천장에는 <성모 승천>이 그려져 있으며,

  

이 성당에서는 루벤스(Peter Paul Rubens)의 대표적 미술작품인(세 폭 제단화: Triptych) "The descent from the cross(십자가에서 내려지는 그리스도, 1611-1614)". ‘십자가에 매달리는 예수(The Raising of the Cross: 1609-1610)’을 볼 수 있으며 당시 안트웨르펜 시장이자 길드 조합장이었던 로콕스(Nicolaas Rocockx)의 요청으로 루벤스가 그린 것입니다.

십자가에서 내려지는 그리스도는 벨기에 7대 보물중의 하나이다.

The Antwerp church belfry

Together with 23 belfries in Flanders and 6 in Wallonia the Antwerp church belfry has been inscribe upon the World Heritage List of the UNESCO Convention on December 4, 1999.

The inscription on this List implies recognition of the outstanding universal value of a cultural or natural site, which deserves protection in the interest of mankind. Since the Middle Ages, belfries symbolise the deep human urge for freedom and democracy and play an exceptional role in the fields of architecture, urban planning and musical history.

The north tower of the Antwerp cathedral is built as a church belfry at the expense of the Brabant city of Antwerp and is still owned by the city. The stately Gothic tower is 123m. high.

Since 1521, this elaborate volume has dominated the right bank of the city and has been entered as such in many representations of the port town. In 1459 the city bell was hung in the belfry which was still under construction at the time. The present clock dates back to 1786. The carillon, with a number of mid-17th-century bells, is still used to introduce many concerts and celebrations.

The north tower of the Our Lady’s Cathedral is 123 meters high, the south tower 65.30 meters, the central aisle 28 meters and the lantern- or crossing-tower where the nave and transepts meet 43 meters.

on the interior, the Cathedral is 118 meters long. At the crossing, it is 67 meters wide. The maximum breadth of the nave is 53.50 meters.

The total surface area of the floor is 8,000 square meters. At big events, 2,400 seats can be provided for. In principle, the Cathedral can hold 25,000 people.

The surface area of the roof amounts to more than 10,000 square meters.

The Cathedral has 7 bays, 125 columns and 128 windows (of which 55 are stained-glass).

In the time of the guilds and trade associations, each of which had its own altar, there were 57 permanent altars distributed throughout the Cathedral.

The nineteenth-century Schyven organ has 90 registers and 5,770 pipes.

The Cathedral has a carillon with 49 bells at its disposal.

Of the bells that can be rung, the Karolus, which dates from 1507 and weighs 6,434 kilograms, is the heaviest.

Maintenance of the Cathedral costs 1.5 million euros per year.

Every year, approximately 360,000 people visit the Cathedral.
