Silver antependium of the central altar of the crossing

Jan Pieter Antoon Verschuylen

In 1865 the Antwerp silversmith Jan Pieter Antoon Verschuylen made this antependium (literally: something that hangs in front), which now adorns the central altar in the crossing. Originally it was intended for the Shoemaker’s chapel on the Schoenmarkt (or shoe market), where Verschuylen was a director.
Surrounded by acanthus leaves, cherub heads and roses, the glorious birth of the Virgin Mary is portrayed. The text on the banderole held tightly by two angels leaves no doubt: ‘Nativitas Gloriosae / Virginis Mariae’.

The antependium has a scalloped border adorned with roses and other plant-like embellishments.
