Archaeological complex "Serdica"

The Archaeological complex "Serdica" presents the remains of the Roman city discovered in the period 2010-2012 during construction works of the subway station "Serdica 2" and the implementation of the project "Ancient cultural and communication complex "Serdica". The scientific research is performed by two archaeological teams under the guidance of doctor Mario Ivanov (National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, BAS), Snezhana Goryanova (National Institute of Archaeology with Museum-BAS) and Konstantin Shalganov (Municipal Cultural Institute "Museum for the History of Sofia"). The complex consists of eight streets, an early Christian Basilica, Thermae, Six large buildings and a late medieval church, located at the underground level on area of over 9000㎡ to the west and south of the central department store (Tsum). Mosaic floors, Inner courtyards, Baths, Toilets and parts of water supply and sewage systems of Serdica are displayed in the excavated buildings. The structures are dated from the period 4th-6th century AD. There are earlier remaines dated from the 1st-3rd century AD, at several locations throughout the complex.

"세르디카"라는 말은 비잔틴 시대 때 소피아의 이름이었다.

기원전 7세기경 트라키아 세르디 부족이 정착하면서 세르디카라는 이름이 붙었고, 14세기 이후에 소피아라는 명칭으로 바뀌게 된다.

    

2~14세기 때 이 곳에 로마제국의 영향력이 미쳤고 로마인들과 원주민들이 섞여서 살아가던 세르디카라는 도시가 있었고, 세르디카 유적들은 3세기 경 로마인들에 의해 만들어졌다.

공산당 본부 앞 광장의 지하도 공사 때 처음 유적지가 발견되어, 지하도 한 켠에는 당시의 모습을 보여주는 성곽의 모형과 발굴작업의 기록사진들이 전시되어 있다.

그 때 발굴된 고대도시 유적은 세르디카의 동문에 해당하는 성벽과 2개의 5가형 탑 이다. 이 유적들은 지하도를 건너가면서 구경할 수 있으며, 현재는 세르디카 고대도시의 많은 부분들이 현대 건물들 아래에 남아있다.

대통령 집무실 정원에 있는 유적은 3세기 로마인들이 지은 목욕탕이다. 또한 집무실 광장 앞 지하도로 내려가면 지하상가와 화장실, 세르디카의 유물인 성벽과 도자기 등이 전시되어있다.

7천 년의 역사를 자랑하는 유럽에서 가장 오래된 도시 중의 하나로 시내 도처에 지난날의 번영을 말해주는 유적과 돌로 포장된 도로가 남아있다.

시내 곳곳에는 이슬람 사원과 그리스 정교 사원이 서 있고 과거 공산주의 체제를 상기시키는 '9월 9일 광장' , '레닌 광장' , '러스키 거리' 등이 볼 만한 거리로 남아있다.

 

2015년 유럽에서 세 번째로 저렴한 배낭여행지로 꼽힌 소피아는 돈을 많이 쓰지 않아도 즐길 거리가 많은 여행지이다.
