- Smoking in the monastery complex ara;

- Entering with revealing clothing (Short skirts, short pants, undervests and any other scant clothes);

- Taking photos and videos in the church and in the monastery museum;

- Bringing in pets;

- Making noise;

- Walking into the monastery's residential floors.

Those who do not comply with the rules are subject to sanctions by the moastery security.

Monastery administration.

Rila Monastery has been inscribed in 1983 upon the World Heritage List of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Inscription on this List confirms the exceptional universal value of the cultural site which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity. Rila Monastery, founded in the 10th century had played the role of important spiritual and educational centre. A characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th-19th centuries), the monument symbolises the awareness of the Bulgarian cultural identity.

불가리아 남서부 릴라 산맥에 위치한 동방 정교회 수도원이다.

릴라 산 릴스키마나스틸에 위치(1147.28m 산속)하고 있는 릴라 수도원은 10세기(927년) 이반 릴스키(St. Ivan Rilsky, 876~946. 요한 릴스키, John of Rila) 수도사가 은신처를 이곳으로 선택하고 작은 사원을 건립한 것에서 그 역사가 시작되었다.

그를 따르던 신자들과 순례자들이 그의 은신처 주변에 촌락을 이루면서 이곳은 종교의 중심지로 점차 변해 갔다. 이반 릴스키 성인(St. Ivan Rilsky)은 치유 능력을 지녔다고 해서 유명한 성인이었다. 그가 죽은 후 통치자들은 그의 유골을 손에 넣고 싶어 하기도 했다. 그래서 그의 유골은 여러 곳을 돌아다니다(1183년 에스테르곰으로 갔다가 비잔틴 제국과 불가리아를 거쳐) 1459년 다시 수도원으로 돌아와 안치되었다.

 

14세기 말에 오스만 제국의 불가리아 침공으로 약 500년(498년)에 걸쳐서 지배를 받는 동안 기독교 신앙을 비롯하여 불가리아어 서적을 읽는 것조차 제한 받았지만 이 수도원만은 묵인 되었다.

14세기 초 큰 지진이 일어나 수도원 건물이 파괴되었는데 이 지방의 귀족인 프레리요 드라고보라가 견고한 요새 형식으로 다시 지었다.

수도원 건물은 1833년 대화재로 대부분 소실되었으나, 1834년부터 1862년까지 진행된 불가리아 국민들의 지원을 통해 재건. 그 후 복구되어 1983년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재 되었다.

2002년 5월 25일에는 불가리아을 방문한 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 이곳을 순례하기도 했다.
