Icon Gallery

The Icons Permanent Exhibition at the City Art Gallery was established in 1975 and is located in a building, built on the site of the former elementary school, part of the church-architectural complex of the Saints Constantine and Helena Orthodox Church in the Old Town.


 Here on can see the best exhibits, selected from the rich fund of the gallery and the collection of the Plovdiv Bishopric, illustrating the development of icon painting in Plovdiv and Southern Bulgaria for five centuries. The oldest and most valuable works are icons from the 15th-16th century, intended for the royal order of iconostasis in medieval churches.


 Here are exhibited 16th century icons from the Saint Constantine and Helena Church, and 17th and 18th century icons form Rakitovo, Hrabrino and Brestovitsa. The most prominent icon-painters from the Tryavna Samokov and Edirne schools are presented here - the masters Dahari Tsanyov and Simeon from Tryavna, Hristo Dimitrov and his sons Dimitar and Zahari Zograf from Samokov, Nikola of Edirne, and other icon-painters.


 The icon gallery periodically makes the me exhibitions that use the funds wealth of icons to reveal the different aspects of symbolism in Christian art.
