The palace of the Ministry of the interior.

The idea of the new headquarters for the Ministry of the Interior appeared more than a century ago, in 1912, when the Parliament apporoved the taking over of the land by the Ministry


1938 - Carol II elaborated a Decree-law to authorize the building of the Palace, the chief architect of the Ministry of teh Interior, Paul Smarandescu, being chosen to ensure the technical management of the works.


1939 - Emil Prager, engineer, gains a new auction to build the Palace and the project is designed by the architect Emil Nadejde.

During World War II, the works at the Palace of the Ministry of the Interior were stopped, and were resumed after the end of the war.


1950 - The Palace of the Ministry of the Interior is completed.


1950-1958 - The Ministry of the Interior carries on its activity inside the building.


1958-1989 - The Central Committee of the Romanian Labour/Communist Party takes over the building, where it used to carry on its activity until the fall of the communism. on the first floor of the building, Nicolae Ceausescu had his office.


1989-2006 - The Palace functions as the residence of the Senate.


2006 - The Ministry of the Interior returns home, inside the Palace that was designed for it at the beginning of the 20th century.

August 21st, 1968

During the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the troops of the Treaty of Warsaw, with the exception of the Romanian ones, Ceausescu delivered a speech to more than 100,000 people gathered in front of the building, taking a stand against the violation of the country's sovereignty (photo 1)


December 21st, 1989

Ceausescu addressed to a great popular assembly gathered in front of the Palace, trying to take control over the masses, unable to understand the fact that the revolution against the regime took place right in front of him.


December 22nd, 1989

After a bloody night, when 1,058 Romanian people died, the crowd invaded the building and the image of the flag with the socialist emblem cut out, waving in the balcony of the Palace, remained a symbol of the Romanian Revolution that took place in 1989 (photo 2, 3)


December 22nd, 1989, 12,06 p.m.

The dictatorial couple flees by helicopter from the roof of the building, right wing (photo 4).
