Monastery Church

This is the second church for the Saxon community in Sighisoara and was first mentioned in a papal letter of the Pope Boniface VIII in 1298. In this indulgence letter it mentiones this church and the "Schespurch" church together.


Originally dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, it was built by the Dominican Monks in 13th century, after the mongol and tartar invasions and they rebuilt it between 1482-1515, in gothic style. After the reformation in the middle 16 century, the Saxons converted to Lutheran evangelism and continued to use the church.


In 1676, the disastrous fire destroyed the city and the town, bit with the help of neighbours communitys and from Austriaa, the church was rebuilt between 1677-1678 in style baroque.


The organ and pulpit date from 1680, are built in the baroque style and are the work of sculptor Johannes West and painter Jeremias Stranovius. The organ has three manuals, one pedal, 36 registers end 2000 pipes. It is still in weekly use. Below the pipes is an inscription "To the glory of God."


The baroque style altar date from 1682 is made of wood, by the same Authors as the organ. From the base up wards you can see images of the Last Supper, The Crucifixion of Christ, the entombment of Christ and the Risen Christ. To the left and right are the apostles Peter and Paul


The Baptismal font was made from bronze in 1440.


The Anatolian Carpets date from 16th-17th century and were donations made by the Saxons guilds and weaver traders in thanks to God for safe travel.


The paintings on the balcony date from the 18th century, donations from guilds.


The stone door dating from 1570 with the inscription "Initium sapientiae, timor Domini" (the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom)


During the 1928/29 restoration, the frescos were found behind the plaster ahead depict Dominican monks and fragments of bores tunics found under the nave floor are also forget to be from than. From this restoration an inscription was written on the walls saying "This church is the fathers heritage, it was strengthende and restored scoring that even in difficult times God is keeping are community together. 1928/29.


The church was renovated again in 1982, the carpets of great artistic value, on display in the church, beautifying the monotonous plainness of the church interior.


The church is still aced to worship God, every Sunday by the local evangelical community of Saxons, who wait you prayer and your donations to help keep this wonderful church in good condition.
