King Ferdinand I of Romania
Prince Ferdinand-Victor-Albert-Meinrad of Hohenzollern was born on August 12th/24th, 1865 (Julian/Gregorian calenders) in Sigmaringen, Germany. He was the second son of Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern (brother of King Carol I of Romania) and of Princess Antonia of Braganza, infante of Portugal.
He attended secondary school in Dusseldorf, and then the courses of the Military School of Kassel, becoming, in 1885, a sub-lieutenant in the Prussian Guard of Potsdam. In 1887, he studied at the Universities of Tubingen and Leipzig. He was a modest and shy person, who preferred solitude. In time, he became a botanist of European renown.
Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern came to Romania for the first time in 1881, when King Carol I was crowned. Starting in 1889, he went through the military hierarchies in the Romanian Army, becoming in 1911 an Army Corps General, and in 1918 a Marshal. on March 18th, 1889 he was officially declared heir to the Romanian throne, receiving the title of "Royal Highness, Prince of Romania".
On December 29th, 1892, Prince Ferdinand married Princess Maria of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha at Signaringgen Castle. They had six children: Carol II (18931953), Elisabeta (1894-1956), Marioara (1899-1961), Nicholae (1903-1977), Ileana (1909-1991) and Mircea (1913-1913).
In 1913, Prince Ferdinand was the supreme commander of the Romanian Army in Bulgaria during the Second Balkan War, and in 1914, after the death of King Carol I, he was proclaimed King of Romania. King Ferdinand of Romania, as a "good Romanian", identified himself as a Romanian national, and broke the kinship and blood ties the family had with Germany. Romania declared war against the Central Powers (Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany) on August 14th/27th, 1916. After two years of refuge in lasi together with the national government, on December 1st, 1918. King Ferdinand returned to Bucharest, which on that date, became the capital of Greater Romania. on October 15the, 1922 he was crowned in Alba Lulia, by his wife's side, Queen Maria of Romania, as king of all the Romanians.
After long suffering illness, Ferdinand I of Romanian passed away on July 20, 1927, at Pelisor Castle in Sinaia. He was buried in the princely church of Curtea de Argep.
