미코노스(Mykonos)(1)(영문 안내문). 그리스(Greece)

Mykonos is probably one of the most typical Greek islands. It belongs to the group of the Cycladic island & was of little importance in ancient times & until the 1950's, mainly visited for its proximity to Delos. But, the sun drenched bare hills rising from the deep blue sea & dotted with dazzling white chapels, windmills, attractive port, whose cubic houses are whitewashed twice a year, were bound to make it a great tourist area.

DISEMBARKATION:

At the island of Mykonos, there are 2 diferent places where passengers may be disembarked which depends on weather conditions upon arrival. If it is not very windy, when you a arrive ashore by tender boat you will arrive at the pier which is located within 5 minutes walking distance from the harbor & town

If it is windy the ship will go to a small port called Tourlos which is more sheltered from the wind. There is still the possibility of disembarkation by tenders but the majority of times the ship will be able to dock. In this case when you arrive ashore there will be buses (8 Euro) waiting on the pier to take you into the town of Mykonos (2 km away). There will be a continuous shuttle bus service & the buses coming back to the port Tourlos will leave form the same point where you left them in town.

CHORA :

Chora, the islands capital, owes its special character to the whitewashed, cubic shaped houses trimmed in every shade of blue, lining its narrow cobblestone streets.

The harbour, full of Aegean craft of every kind, is always lively during summer. The shore leads around to the area known as "Little Venice" because of its hig-arcaded Venetian houses built right up to the water's edge. Its real name is Alefkandhra, a trendy district packed with art galleries, bars & discos. Back off the seafront, behind Platia Alefkandhra, are Mykonos' two Cathedrals: Roman Catholic & Greek Orthodox. Beyond the famous windmills, look over the area, an occasion for all kinds of photos.

* Be sure to look inside one of the many chapels that you will see everywhere & keep an eye out for Petros the famous pelican that is usually strolling around the harbor area.

At the base of the Delos jetty, the Folklore Museum (Mon-Sat 4:00pm-8:00pm) housed in an eighteenth-century mansion & cramming in a larger-than-usual collection of bric-a-brac, including a vast four-poster bed. The museum shares the promontory as the old Venetian Kastro, the entrance to which is marked by Mykonos's oldest & best-known church, Paraportiani, which is fascinatin asymmetrical building of four chapels amalgamated into one.

SHOPPING:

Mykonos is full of shops, offering among many othe kinds: Clothes shops, jewelers, Greek art & paintings, hand knitted sweaters, hand painted T-shirts, furs & Greek souvenirs.

* Some shops/stores close during the early hours of the afternoon (2:00pm-5:00pm) but will re-open

RESTAURANTS:

The town has every kind of food & restaurants to offer including as well as Greek cuisine: Chinese, Mexican, Italian & French. There are some very nice open-air tavernas along the water front in the area of "Little Venice" with the most delicious fish.

*Beware if ordering lobster; it is usually priced on the menu by weight & not per lobster. Apart from tavernas you will also find some beatiful garden restaurants & many snack bars.
