The complex of the palaces situated around the IVth courtyard came about during the building activities from the middle of the 14th century to the 18th century. Despite the complicated building development, the palaces retained the features of Renaissance style from the most flourishing period in the second half of the 16th century during the reign of Wilhelm von Rosenberg (1535-1592). The most outstanding works are those of architects Antonio Ericero Vlach, Baldassare Maggi d´Arogno and painter Gabriel de Blonde.
On the adapted and partly rough-hewn rock, below the courtyard there were multi-storied vaulted cellars built to serve as a reliable foundation for the palace walls of the palaces reaching several dozen metres in height. The interiors of the three-story castle cellars housing a ceramics exposition are open to the public.
The adaptations carried out in the course of the 17th and 18th century didn´t detract from the splendid and mighty character of the Renaissance residence, in fact, the residence's features were respected. As an example, among others, the facade paintings in both courtyards depicting the allegorical and mythological scenes and figures from the Greek and Roman history were preserved. The unknown author came most likely from France or south-west Germany, judging by the painting technique. The adaptations done on the facades in the 17th and 18th century didn't destroy the paintings. In the years 1909 - 1912 the paintings were restored and enriched by Schwarzenberg restorer Theofil Melicher. The Upper Castle has a special importance to visitors as its interiors are open to the public in two guided tours.
Wall Paintings in the IVth Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle
The origin of the Wall Paintings in the IVth Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle dates to around the year 1588. It was done in the context of the adaptation headed by Wilhelm von Rosenberg, All walls, as in the IIIrd Courtyard, are covered by painted bossage-selfish freestone masonry broken down by zones, with scenes on oval fields alternating with large zones decorated by niches, where painted statues stand. The expressive narrow zone, with motifs of imitation stone vaults, confines the Wall Paintings.
Allegories of the five Senses are illustrated on an oblong field between the first and the second floor. The most distinct is the allegory of Touch and Smell. The men-at-arms of the first floor niches, on the eastern and northern walls, are hardly recognizable. The Charities are probably standing in the three niches of the southern wall. on the eastern wall, there is a man-at-arms and a woman with a tree twig. Probably the statues of the Planets, Saturn, and Sol are in the second floor niches of the eastern wall while Mars, Venus, and Mercury are placed on the southern part. They are probably the same figures as are recognized on the walls of the previous courtyard. A man in a costume of the period, perhaps an artist or a donator, is standing behind the later made extension of the eastern and southern wing corner conjunction. The painter placed the allegories of Belief, Hope, Love, Temperance, Power, Wisdom, and Justice into seven niches of the northern wall. The connecting theme of all paintings is nowadays difficult to distinguish. There are more colors used in these paintings than in comparison with the previous courtyard. Besides the main basic shades of gray, black, ochre, and red-brown, there are green and blue colors used as well. That, along with the fact that the architectonic elements are spread, as it was evidently built without a common relation and order, reduces the reliability of a proper link imitation. on the other hand, in comparison with the IIIrd Courtyard, the Figural Painting is more alive and more ornamental, maybe due to the quality of the models. The author of paintings is unknown, but he could have come from France or from the southwestern part of Germany, judging by how the Paintings were provided

On the adapted and partly rough-hewn rock, below the courtyard there were multi-levelled vaulted cellars built to serve as a reliable foundation for the palace walls, dozens of metres high. The buildings constructed in Gothic style are preserved only in a few places, especially in the eastern part of the Upper Castle (Český Krumlov Castle in the Gothic Period), namely the Chapel of St.George and St.Catherine, mentioned for the first time in 1334, and a Gothic room of unknown purpose next to the so-called Roman room. Other buildings were constructed in the course of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
It is interesting that the splendid and mighty character of the Renaissance residence was not disturbed by adaptations carried out in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, but rather respected. As an example, among other things, the facade paintings in both courtyards (the work of painter Gabriel de Blonde from around 1575) which represent allegorical and mythological scenes and figures from the Greek and Roman history (Wall Paintings in the IIIrd Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle,Wall Paintings in the IVth Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle).
