Schwarzenberg Guard

The establishment of the Castle guard was initiated for representational purposes by Adam Franz of Schwarzenberg at the beginning of the 18 th century in Hluboka nad Vltavou castle. The guard was moved of Cesky Krumlov in 1742. The space on the 2nd Courtyard of Cesky Krumlov Castle was at the guard members disposal, while the guardsmen performed their sentry duties on the Courtyard and in the Castle Tower. They assisted with the floating logs and grain harvesting at the courts. Their other tasks included escorting the seigniorial cashbox during travel as well as criminals, and frequently held a real militari function.

Some of them held second posts as scribes at the large manor administrative offices. The guard had their own music band which played at dance, balls & castle evening parties as well as after hunting parties.

After World War II the guard had only 3 members. Upon the Order of the National Land Committee in Prague dated March 1948, the grenadiers' guard was dissolved.

Adam Franz zu Schwarzenberg

Adam Franz received the Český Krumlov estates with the castle as heritage of the Eggenbergsin 1719. He created one of the most extensive dominions in all of Bohemia. He looked after the economic development of his estates. He especially asserted forestry, as his greatest hobby was hunting. He took advantage of this at the empirical court of Karel VI. where he served as chief groom and dignitary, and for this reason he had the Baroque hunting chateau Ohrada built near Hluboká nad Vltavou. His passion for hunting turned out to be fatal for him, as he was deadly injured in 1732 during a hunt near Brandýs nad Labem.
