The King's Bedroom

The room was created by Louis XIV in 1701 and was where he lived until his death on 1 September 1715. In this room the royal rising and going to sleep ceremonies took place.

Above the bed, the allegory of France watching over the sleeping King. In relief by Nicolas Coustou, 1701.

The attic, these paintings are from the collection of Louis XIV and are here back in their original setting. They are: The Four Evangelists and Cesar's Denarius by Valentin de Boulogne, and, Agar in the Desert by Giovanni Lanfranco.

 Council Study

Here, on different days. the king presided over the various Councils with his ministers as well as granting audiences and receiving oaths of loyalty.

Classical bust of Alexander the Great in porphyry, acquired by Louis XV and placed here in 1738.

On the Mantelpiece, a clock to the glory of Louis XIV by the horologist Martinot and the bronze craftsman Gallien, made for Louis XV in 1754.

Two vases known as Mars and Minerva. Sevres porcelain and chased bronze by Thomire, acquired by Louis XVI. Made for this room in 1787.
