Antechamber of the Grand Couvert

The Queen's Guard Room until 1680, it became the first antechamber of the Queen's apartment, where the King and Queen took their meals in public. Marie-Antoinette gave cocerts and balls and held her grand dinner service here. The royal couple "dined" in front of the Court on Sundays and on days when ceremonies took place.

On the large crimson damask hanging, rewoven specially after a document of the period:

 

Autumn or the Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne, after Pierre Mignard, tapestry adaptation of a scene in the Galerie de St-Cloud. High-wrap.

Delivered between 1702 and 1708. Manufacture des Gobelins. on loan from the Mobilier National.

 

Between the windows : Busts of a man and a woman. Low-wrap tapestry. Manufacture des Gobelins. After Charles Le Brun. Early 18th century. on loan from the Mobilier National.

 

Along the wall:

Five wall seats and two stool, Louis XV style, upholestered by the Manufacture de la Savonnerie, 18th century. Moulded wood painted white.

 

Six leaves of an assembled screen.

After Jean-Baptiste Blin de Fontenay.

On the mantelpiece:

Louis XVI style clock. Gilt and engraved bronze, violet wood veneer. Clockwork by Etienne Lenoir.

 

Pair of candlesticks, Louis XVI period.

Gilt and engraved bronze.

 

In front of the fireplace:

Two Etiquette high-back chairs from the suite of the King and Queen. Crimson silk velours, gold trimmings. Wood painted red and gold. Restoration after a description from 1774.

 

Twelve stools, seats upholstered in crimson silk velours with gold fringe, restoration.

 

On the table:

LInen damask tablecloth. Fleur-de-lys pattern. Doubletrim bearing the arms of France.

 

Six linen napkins (19th century) including two napkins of the King and Queen decorated with gadroons and small squares, folded according to the traditional of the European courts.

 

Pieces from George III of England's dinner service, Robert-Joseph Auguste.

Silver, Paris, Louis XVI period:

- one serving jar for oille stew,

- two candelabras,

- four plates,

- four dish-covers,

(On loan from the Musee du Louvre)

- six silver dishes,

- evocation of the King's and Queen's vermeil cadenas (a tray with compartments on which the place settings and spices were laid).
