A Floral Kingdom

South Africa is the only country in the world with its own floral kingdom - The Cape Floral Kingdom. It is the smallest of the world's six recognised plant kingdoms but, far its size, it is also the richest. In an area of 90,000 km2 are found some 8,500 species, many of which grow nowhere else.

 

The Cape Peninsula Nationa Park is a showcase for this flora, with representative examples of all the major plant communities found in the Cape Floral Kingdom. It is also - with 2,285 species - richer in species of plants than any other area its size in the Cape Floral Kingdom and the rest of the world. surpassing even tropical rainforest. Hence the reason it has been nominated for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

On this summit you may notice only a few low, stubby plants. These are elements of a vegetation type collectively called Fynbos (Fine-leafed bush) and a fraction of some 1,500 remarkable plants found across this mountain. Some may look familiar to you. Having captured the imagination of plant lovers and horticulturalists for centuries, many descendants of this 'flora of the Cape'are to be found today gracing window boxes and gardens around the world
