Colossal sculpture of a scarab beetle

Ptolomaic Period, about 200 BC

 

This is one of the largest images of the scarab known from Egypt. The scarab represented the god Khepri, and was associsated with rebirth and the rising sun. This sculpture was moved from Egypt to Istanbul in medieval times, but may originally have stood in the temple of the sungod at Heliopolis
