The Vow

Made by the Voortrekker men

Under command of Andries Pretorius

Between 9 and 15 December

Before the Battle of Blood River

On 16 December 1838

 

Here we stand before the holy God of heaven and earth.

 

to make a vow to Him that

 

if He well protect us and give our enemy into our hand

enemy into our hand,

 

we shall keep this day and date every year as a day

of thanksgiving like a Sabbath,

 

and that we shall erect a house to His honour

wherever it should please Him,

 

and that we also will tell our children that

they should share in that with us in memory

for the future generations.

 

For the honour of His Name will be glorified by giving

Him the fame and honour for the victory.

 

 

 

Woman and children Statue

Anton van Wouw

Anton van Wouw (1862-1945) was one of South Africa's most well known sculptors during the first half of the Twentieth Century, His work is based on the accurate portrayal of reality (realism) and he mainly worked in bronze. Some of his monumental works include: the Women's Memorial in Bloemfontein, the Kruger statue on Church Square, Pretoria, and the Woman and Children statue here in front of the Voortrekker Monument.

 

The Voortrekker woman was placed in an honorary position at the foot of the Voortrekker Monument. Without her contribution, perseverance and sacrifices, the Great Trek (1835-1854) would not have resulted in permanent settlement in the interior.

 

This sculpture group was completed in 1938 and was Van Wouw's last commission. It was the first public sculpture cast in one piece in Pretoria by Renzo Vignali, The bronze status is 4,1 meters high and weight 2,5 tons.
