Rock Lobsters are locally known as crayfish or kreef. They are more tasty than the freshwater crayfish of Europe and do not have the massive nippers of true crayfish and lobsters. Rock lobsters are crustaceans - hard-shelled relatives of crabs and prawns with a long, muscular tail ending in a tail fan. The most important commercial species is the West Coast rock lobsters, Jasus Ialandii. on the east coast there are five species in a variety of colours but they occur in smaller numbers. There are two deep-water species, the South Coast rosk lobster Palinurus gilchristi and the Natal deep-sea rock lobster Palinurus delagoae.

Predators Many juvenile rock lobsters are eaten by fish and octopuses but large rock lobsters have few predators, apart from humans and seals. They can live for 50 years or more.
