The City Observatory

Built: 1818-22

Architect: William H. Playfair

The City Observatory is the oldest of Edinburgh's observatories and was built for the Astronomical Institution, which was founded in 1812 by the architect's uncle, Professor John Playfair.

The building takes the form of a classical temple with a central dome to house the telescope.

In 1896 the Observatory was replaced by the larger Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill, to the south of the city, which suffered less from city-centre light pollution. Today the City Observatory continues to be used by the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh.

Erected in 1896, this six-inch Cooke Refractor is the Observatory's main telescope

Collective / New Art / Free For All

This is Collective: a contemporary visual art organisation that delivers an exciting and ambitious porgramme of new exhibitions, commissions and projects. Collective is 30 years old in 2014 and has been fundamental to the cultural vitality of visual art in Scotland during that time.

Collective is working closely with City of Edinburgh Council, Creative Scotland and Edinburgh World Heritage, to develop the City Observatory complex. Over the next two years, we will be making it our new home, opening the whole site to the public for the first time and placing contemporary art in the heart of Edinburgh.

So far we have refurbished the City Dome, which hosts new exhibitions by international and UK based artists but we plan to develop and open up the entire walled complex to the public.

The Satellites Programme, which supports emergent, Scotland-based artists, is currently housed in this temporary accommodation.

The new Open-Air Cafe, run by MLK, can be found inside the main gates. They offer great sandwiches, wraps, barista coffed speicalist teas and home baking.
